High Availability

High availability refers to information systems where services are always accessible, even in the case of dysfunction within some or all of its components. In a world where natural and man made disasters occur everyday, this has become a necessity, not a luxury.

High availability can be viewed as insurance against work stoppage in the event of breakdown or failure, which in most cases would be synonymous with financial losses.

It is also potentially a source of new opportunities as it allows a firm to achieve better delivery and quality of service. In the financial sector for example, the demand for around the clock service has increased dramatically.

The expertise of Orinux is oriented towards businesses who by necessity need constant access to their data. In particular, our experience with financial institutions has developed our knowledge of critical systems and the challenges which accompany them. Because of this, we understand the importance of the following principles:

  • the degree of required availability is determined solely by the needs of the enterprise. An absolute level of availability that is adequate for all businesses does not exist
  • in achieving high availability, all components, be they technical, human or otherwise, should be set apart and analyzed separately
  • the probability of a failure can be minimized by creating an infrastructure which emphasizes clear procedures and preventive maintenance
  • the process of recovery has to be scheduled and controlled

We have consolidated our skills with high availability tools and software so that we are able to install the most adaptable, high-performing and robust solutions.

Because Orinux's consultants are architects as well as integrators, we can take charge of all the different steps needed to achieve a high availability solution, those being:

  • analysis of needs and actual constraints
  • advice on the necessary physical architecture and the installation of possible complementary components
  • installation, configuration and upgrading of high availability software such as HACMP, VCS and Service Guard
  • integration of software and databases such as Oracle, Informix and DB2
  • validation of the configuration and conduct of comprehensive tests
  • training and transfer of knowledge to ensure the control of the solution
  • documentation of production operations
